Welcome

Consecrated in 1932, Acorn Lodge has proudly served Freemasonry in London for over ninety years and continues to flourish under the guidance of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of England. Throughout its history, the Lodge has remained true to its foundations while evolving to meet the needs of each new generation of Freemasons.

We are a forward-thinking Lodge that honours the time-honoured principles of Freemasonry while recognising the realities of modern life. Our aim is to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where Brethren, particularly those balancing the demands of work, family, and personal development, can find friendship, encouragement, and fulfilment within Freemasonry.

Family and fellowship are central to who we are. We actively encourage the involvement of our members’ families, including children and grandchildren, in social events and festive occasions. By welcoming families into our wider Lodge life, we foster an inclusive spirit and help them gain a genuine appreciation of the values, friendships, and sense of belonging that Freemasonry represents.

Acorn Lodge places strong emphasis on mentoring and membership development, ensuring that every Brother is supported throughout his Masonic journey. From initiation onwards, guidance and encouragement are readily available, helping Brethren to grow in confidence, understanding, and enjoyment of the Craft. Members are also encouraged to visit other Lodges, broaden their experience, and build lasting friendships across the wider Masonic community.

Charity lies at the heart of our Lodge. We take great pride in our charitable endeavours and in the satisfaction that comes from helping others. Guided by the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth, we work together in a spirit of unity and camaraderie, finding both purpose and enjoyment in contributing positively to society.

History

Acorn Lodge No. 5320 was consecrated on Monday, 15th February 1932, at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London. This was a moment of particular distinction, as Acorn Lodge was only the second Lodge to be consecrated in the newly opened Freemasons’ Hall, now one of the most iconic Masonic centres in the world.

The Lodge’s origins date to 1930, when members of Honor Oak Lodge No. 1986 sponsored the formation of a new Lodge. The name “Acorn Lodge” was chosen as a symbolic progression from the Honor Oak, representing growth, strength, and continuity. A petition was submitted to the United Grand Lodge of England on 26th October 1931, and, following its approval, the Lodge was consecrated the following February.

Early meetings were held at Anderton’s Hotel, Fleet Street, until 1939. Despite the disruption of the Second World War, Acorn Lodge continued to meet in London’s West End throughout the war years, preserving fellowship and continuity in uncertain times.

After the war, the Lodge met at the Kensington Palace Hotel until 1969, followed by several distinguished venues including Colonial House, Mincing Lane, and The Forest Hill Banqueting Suite, Perry Rise, before settling in 1975 at its present home, the South East London Masonic Centre.

From its earliest days, Acorn Lodge has reflected one of Freemasonry’s core principles, equality. Its Brethren come from diverse occupations, cultures, and backgrounds, united by friendship and mutual respect, a quality that continues to define the Lodge’s character and vitality.

The Lodge’s lineage extends through the Brethren of Honor Oak Lodge to the Lodge of Faith No. 141, consecrated in November 1774 at the Royal Mortar, Woolwich, Kent, linking Acorn Lodge to over two centuries of Masonic heritage in South East London.

In the spirit of growth and fellowship, Acorn Lodge sponsored the consecration of Vine Lodge No. 8436 in September 1972, extending its Masonic family.

Today, Acorn Lodge remains a thriving and welcoming Lodge, faithful to its founding values, where tradition and fellowship continue to flourish.
